The British period piece took four Academy Awards, including the prize for best picture.
The King’s Speech beat out its main rival The Social Network in the major Oscar categories, nabbing a best director award for Tom Hooper and a best acting statuette for Colin Firth on top of the night’s main prize. Makers of the biopic about Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg didn’t leave empty handed either though, winning three awards including best adapted screenplay. The award ceremony’s producers’ decision to choose youngsters James Franco and Anne Hathaway as hosts had mixed results, with Franco spending most of the night staring quizzically into space with a goofy grin plastered on his face. The night’s most unintentionally humourous moment came when best supporting actress winner Melissa Leo dropped the f-bomb during her rambling acceptance speech.
