Libyan Army Attacks Protesters Sheltering In Mosque, Witness Says

Unconfirmed reports indicate the military blasted a mosque in the western city of Zawiya with anti-aircraft missiles and automatic weapons.

An unnamed witness said the protesters inside the mosque were armed only with hunting rifles and sustained heavy casualties in the attack. A day earlier, an aide to Moammar Gadhafi reportedly arrived in Zawiya and told protesters to leave or they would face a massacre. It is only the latest troubling report of the violence that has fractured Libya as Gadhafi attempts to cling to power with a brutal crackdown on anti-government forces. Turks who were evacuated from Libya aboard Turkish ships this week said that they had seen bodies hanging from telephone polls and militiamen carting around truckloads of corpses. The UN is reportedly considering declaring a no-fly zone over Libya to prevent the air force from bombing protesters.
