Even ambulances have become a target for snipers and Libyans are being left on the streets to die.
As Moammar Gadhafi’s grip on power loosens, the Libyan leader has unleashed a ferocious crackdown on his own people, reportedly hiring foreign mercenaries to fire indiscriminately at anyone seen moving in the streets. Serious cracks have appeared in Gadhafi’s regime since anti-government protests hit the country last week. Libyan ambassadors across the world have resigned in protest against the violence, cities in the east of the country are now controlled by protesters, and some units of the military have defected. Two Libyan fighter pilots landed in Malta Monday claiming they had been ordered to bomb anti-government protesters but refused. Conservative estimates from Human Rights Watch put the number of dead since protests began at at least 233.
