Critics say Mikhail Grabovski should not have been allowed back on the ice after taking two hits to the head.
Toronto Maple Leaf fans were delighted to watch Grabovski score the winning marker with 61 seconds left in a 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins Tuesday night. But observers say the player might very well have suffered a concussion earlier in the game and have raised questions about the NHL’s procedures for identifying head injuries mid-game. Grabovski was visibly woozy and off-balance after taking a crushing body check from Zdeno Cahara, the Bruins’ 6’ 9 monster of a defenceman. Leafs trainers gave him a quick once-over on the bench and let him back in the game. The debate over concussions in the NHL has been reignited recently after superstar Sidney Crosby’s stellar season was derailed by two headshots he suffered in January.
