Chief foreign correspondent Lara Lucas is recovering in hospital after suffering a “brutal and sustained” attack during celebrations in Cairo.
There was reportedly an ugly side to the jubilation that washed over Egypt at the moment of its liberation Hosni Mubarak’s dictatorship last Friday. As crowds in Cairo’s Tahrir Square exploded in celebration at the news of president Mubarak’s resignation, Lara Lucas, chief foreign correspondent for CBS, was separated from her crew and endured what the network described as “a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating” before being rescued by a group of women and several Egyptian soldiers. She is now recovering in a U.S. hospital. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, there were 140 incidents of reporters being attacked during the Egyptian uprising.
