As celebrations stretch into the night in Egypt, speculation begins as to which opposition figures will step in to fill the void.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces has taken control of Egypt, and the remnants of Hosni Mubarak’s government have been dissolved. The country now enters an unusual phase of government in which the military has seized power, but the reaction on the streets is one of overwhelming support rather than fear of military rule. Spokesmen for the military say its goal is to move the country towards democratic government, and opposition leaders Mohamed ElBaradei and Ayman Nour have signaled their willingness to participate in the new government. Speaking to Al Jazeera, ElBaradei said he will do whatever the Egyptian people want him to do, and Nour said although his participation in politics under Mubarak’s regime was traumatic, he would consider running in new elections.
