Outraged by Hosni Mubarak’s refusal to step down, protesters converge on the presidential palace and other government institutions.
Mubarak took to the airwaves last night to deliver a speech in which many thought he would announce his resignation. Instead he pledged to stay on, sparking levels of anger not yet seen since protests began three weeks ago and seemingly strengthening anti-government protesters’ resolve to oust him. What could be the largest protests yet are now taking place across the country in what has been dubbed “Farewell Friday.” About 200 people were outside the presidential palace, with thousands more reportedly on the way, but the military has now closed off the road leading up to the building. The military announced Thursday it endorsed Mubarak’s decision not to resign.
