Egyptian Demonstrators Stage Biggest Protests Yet

Sweeping concessions by the government have failed to stop the swell of anti-Mubarak protests.

They only want one thing: for Hosni Mubarak to go. That is the message Egyptians continue to send to their 30-year president, and each compromise he makes seems only to strengthen their calls for his ouster. As the government announced it would raise civil servants’ salaries by 15 per cent and begin hiring legions of the unemployed, Tuesday the biggest protests the country has seen since unrest began three weeks ago were staged in Cairo’s Tahrir Square and, for the first time, outside the Egyptian parliament building. Vice President Omar Suleiman appears to be losing patience, and issued a public statement saying that the country cannot sustain unrest for much longer. He also rejected Germany’s offer to give Mubarak asylum.
