Google Launches “Speak-to-Tweet” Service for Egyptian Protesters

With internet service cut off across the country, the company has developed a way Egyptians can use Twitter over their phone.

Google’s corporate motto “Don’t Be Evil” sounds like a joke, but apparently they take it seriously. With millions of Egyptians on the streets of Cairo Tuesday to demand the end of President Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year rule, the internet giant has launched new technology to get their voices heard. Mubarak has shut off internet service in an apparent bid to stop protestors from organizing or communicating with the outside world, but using Google’s new “speak-to-tweet” service, Egyptians can leave a voicemail on a special phone line, which is then translated into an audio file and posted on Twitter with the tag #egypt. A Google source says the company isn’t taking sides with the protesters, but simply facilitating ways to communicate.
