Somali Terror Group Recruiting in Toronto

  • First Posted: Jan 27 2011 08:29 AM

Canadian security officials believe at least 20 young men from the Toronto area have joined the al-Shabaab terror group.

It was only in March of last year that al-Shabaab was officially declared a terrorist organization by the federal government, and already security officials say it’s the number one threat to Canadian security. According to Insp. Keith Finn of Canada's Integrated National Security Enforcement Team, authorities have intercepted several young men who were traveling from to Somalia to train with al-Shabaab, but some would-be terrorists evaded authorities and could return to commit terror attacks on Canadian soil. Most of the men were from the Greater Toronto Area, which boasts one of the largest expatriate Somali communities in the world. Al-Shabaab has been linked to al Qaeda and claimed responsibility for bombings in Uganda that killed 74 people in July 2010.
