Taco Bell “Meat” is Only 36 Per Cent Beef

An Alabama law firm is suing the fast food chain for false advertising over its “taco meat filling.”

This is certainly gross but, really, is anyone surprised? It turns out that slimy brown stuff inside your Volcano Double Beef Burrito isn’t exactly Grade A quality, but instead a combination of substances like isolated oat product, garlic powder, and sodium phosphate, with beef making up only 36 per cent of the mixture. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s definition, such a concoction can’t be called “beef,” and an Alabama law firm is suing Taco Bell for advertising it as such. The packages of slurry that arrive at the restaurants and are never seen by customers are labeled “taco meat filling,” but even that’s inaccurate. U.S. law requires “meat filling” to have at least 40 per cent meat.
