Liberals Unleash Kinder, Gentler Attack Ads

The new commercials target the Conservatives’ plans to buy fighter jets and cut corporate taxes.

The Liberals have responded to the campaign-style ads the Conservatives unveiled earlier this week with two commercials of their own. But while the Tory ads feature sinister voiceovers questioning Michael Ignatieff’s patriotism, the Grits have tried to strike a different tone, using a female narrator and focusing on policy. The two 15-second spots take aim at Conservatives’ controversial $16-billion purchase of 65 fighter jets and plans to cut taxes for corporations. The narrator asks, “Is this your Canada? Or Harper’s?” The ads are yet another sign that the federal parties are preparing for an election that could come as early as February if the opposition decides to withdraw support for the Conservatives’ minority government.
