Some motorists have been stuck in their cars for 20 hours as snow wallops Alberta.
A stretch of the Trans-Canada highway east of Calgary has been shut down after a huge winter storm this weekend reduced visibility to zero and created snowdrifts higher than transport trucks. Authorities temporarily opened the highway Sunday and allowed a snowplow-led convoy to attempt to reach Calgary, but closed the road again when it got dark. The RCMP is searching the road for any more stranded drivers and attempting to take them to nearby shelters. On Saturday 115 accidents were reported in a 24-hour period a 10-vehicle pile-up resulted in the death of a 69-year-old woman.
