Arizona Rampage Suspect to Make First Appearance in Court

Jared Lee Loughner will be represented by the same lawyer who defended the Unabomber.

Loughner, the suspect in the shooting rampage targeting Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords Saturday, is scheduled to appear in court for the first time Monday afternoon. He is facing federal charges that include first degree murder, attempted murder, and attempting to kill a member of congress. Judy Clarke, a public defender with a history of working high-profile cases including that of Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, has been appointed Loughner’s counsel. Loughner is reportedly not talking to authorities, leaving police to speculate what motivated him to kill six people and injure 14 others outside a Tuscon Safeway. He had posted anti-government rants on the internet and those who knew him say he was psychologically disturbed. Giffords remains in hospital in a medically-induced coma.
