The junior hockey team will face their other big rival, Russia, in the championship game on Wednesday.
Whenever the U.S. hosts the world junior hockey tournament, organizers are careful to stage it within driving distance of the Canadian border. Hence the tilt in Buffalo Monday was a U.S. home game in name only, with Canadian hockey fans braving a two-hour wait at the border to flood HSBC arena with a sea of red jerseys, urging the Canadian juniors to a 4-1 victory over the team that beat them in the finals last year. Canada jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period courtesy of goals by Curtis Hamilton and Quinton Howden and never looked back, pounding goalie Jack Campbell with 41 shots. Canada will take on Russia at 7 pm Wednesday for the gold.
