A woman who arrived aboard the migrant ship in August was wearing a tell-tale sign that may link her to the militant group.
If the Sri Lankan refugee claimant is a member of the Tamil Tigers, she did not do a great job of hiding it. According to a representative of the Canada Border Services Agency, the unidentified woman arrived in Canada wearing a thali necklace that is only given to members of the militant group on their wedding day. The Tamil Tigers were defeated in Sri Lanka’s decades-long civil war last year, and are considered a terrorist group by Ottawa. The woman, who remains in custody in Burnbay, B.C., was one of 492 Tamil refugee claimants who arrived in the country Aug. 13 aboard the smuggling ship the MV Sun Sea. The mass arrival prompted calls to overhaul Canada’s immigration policy.
