According to a report by the Council of Europe, Hashim Thaçi is the boss of an organized crime group that has smuggled weapons, drugs, and human organs across Europe.
Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, but if the country has any ambitions to join the European Union they might want to pick a new leader. Days after Hashim Thaçi became prime minister in Kosovo’s first post-independence elections, the Council of Europe has released a disturbing report alleging that he is the head of the Drenica crime group and that in 2000 he orchestrated the harvesting of kidneys from Serbian inmates of secret Albanian prisons. Drenica began operating in the run-up to the 1999 Kosovo war and controlled the region’s heroin trade. Critics have accused the international community that underwrites Kosovo’s independence of ignoring Kosovar leaders’ crimes simply because those of their Serbian rivals were larger.
