Controversial border plans are expected to be on the agenda when Hillary Clinton and Patricia Espinosa meet with Lawrence Cannon Monday.
U.S. and Canadian officials are reportedly in talks to create something called the “Beyond the Border” initiative, which would see Ottawa and Washington cooperate to create an integrated North America-wide perimeter. That plan is expected to be discussed today when Clinton and her Mexican counterpart meet with Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon outside of Ottawa. Some are welcoming the plan as a way to streamline the cross-border trade that has been hampered by increased security in the post-9-11 era, but others say partially ceding control of our borders to the U.S. will result in a serious loss of sovereignty. The recent electoral unrest in Haiti is also expected to be a major topic of the trilateral meetings.
