Elizabeth Edwards Dies

The wife of former vice presidential candidate John Edwards succumbed to cancer Tuesday.

On Monday, Elizabeth Edwards announced that she had been told by doctors that further treatment for her cancer would be unproductive because it had spread from her breast to her liver. Only a day later, she died at her home in Chapel Hill, N.C. She was 61. A lawyer by trade, she served prominent roles in her husband’s campaigns. A day after his defeat as a vice presidential candidate in 2004, she found out she had breast cancer. Treatment put the disease into remission but it returned in 2007. Her life was further thrown into turmoil when it was revealed in 2008 that her husband had fathered a child with one of his campaign workers. Shortly after, the pair separated legally.
