British Researchers Claim Major MS Breakthrough

A new study could pave the way to reverse the nerve damage done by multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis has become a hot-button political issue in Canada in recent months, as grassroots patients organizations and Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall continue to champion a controversial treatment for the condition called “liberation therapy.” That treatment is controversial because it goes against much of the accepted science surrounding MS, and Ottawa refuses to fund it. But new research could point the way to a treatment that will receive broader support. Scientists say they’ve found a way to regenerate myelin sheaths, the insulation protecting nerve fibres in the brain, and are hailing it as a major breakthrough in the fight against MS. The treatment has yet to reach its clinical trial stage however and may not be available for 15 years.
