Police have made an arrest in a bizarre slaying in the city’s east end, thanks to the efforts of an elderly man.
Witnesses say a man walked into the Main Street branch of the Toronto Public Library at 4 p.m. yesterday and approached another man sitting on a bench, sprayed him with pepper spray, and then shot him with a crossbow. The attacker fled the library and jumped into a U-Haul truck around the corner, but an elderly witness followed him in his car and managed to take down the truck’s licence plate number and called the police. Moments later the attacker was arrested. The victim, believed to be in his forties, was pronounced dead at the scene. The slaying is Toronto’s 59th homicide of the year, and apparently the first ever with such a weapon.
