Senate Makes Decision on Scrapping Penny

But they won’t tell us what it is until a proposal is formally tabled in the upper chamber.

The Senate may be about to recommend scrapping Canada’s one-cent coin, and it’s all your fault. The Canadian mint produces 500 million pennies a year because many of the coins end up in couches, mason jars, and piggy banks and are effectively taken out of circulation by Canadians who can’t be bothered to spend them. Each penny costs 1.5 cents to make. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty asked the Senate to study the coin three years ago, and the upper chamber has apparently reached a conclusion on its fate. Senator Joseph Day said that what was decided won’t be announced until the Senate gives Flaherty its recommendation and a bill is tabled, which should happen before the Christmas break.
