The Saskatchewan farmer was convicted in 1998 of murdering his severely disabled daughter.
Robert Latimer was given a life sentence in 1998 with no chance of parole for ten years. Since September of this year has been allowed to be away from his Victoria halfway house for five days a week and he’s now been granted full parole, but will remain under some form of supervision from the justice system for the rest of his life. Latimer’s case continues to generate controversy because he has always said he killed his 12-year-old daughter Tracy out of mercy. She was in pain and suffering from cerebral palsy. The court that convicted him was sympathetic to his claims, originally sentencing him to only one year, but disabled rights activists contend his crime sets a dangerous precedent.
