The popular PC leader had heart surgery earlier this year.
The CBC is reporting that Williams is set to announce his departure from politics. His office issued a surprise press release earlier today that said he would be making an announcement about his political future in the legislature. Williams has been premier since he was swept to power by a landslide victory in 2003, and is widely revered in Newfoundland and Labrador for his tenacious defence of his province’s interests. He recently signed a landmark deal with Nova Scotia to develop the Lower Churchill hydroelectric plant in Labrador, a project he has described as his legacy. Earlier this year, the 60-year-old underwent heart surgery in Florida.
