Brig. Gen. Daniel Menard is accused of having a fling with a subordinate while in Afghanistan.
Menard has already been stripped of his command and reassigned to a desk job, but he will also be brought before a court martial next year that could sentence him to up to 40 years in jail. He’s charged with two counts of conduct prejudicial to good order and four counts of obstruction of justice in relation to a five-month affair he allegedly had with Master Cpl. Bianka Langlois beginning last November. Menard was Canada’s top soldier in Afghanistan at the time, and had 2,800 Canadian soldiers under his command. Earlier this year two other Canadian officers were reprimanded for having inappropriate relationships, but neither were court martialed. Military law forbids soldiers from having sexual relations while overseas, even if they’re married.
