North Korea's artillery attack yesterday was the first in decades to target non-combatants, but it was initially thought no civilians had been killed.
The bodies of two civilians have been pulled from rubble on the South Korean island hit by a barrage of North Korean artillery fire yesterday. Two marines were also killed in the attack, and it was initially thought no civilians had died. While there have been deadly firefights along the border since the Korean War, this is the first time a civilian population has been the target of an attack since 1953 and tensions between the two Koreas are the highest they have been in decades. A U.S. aircraft carrier has been dispatched to the Yellow Sea, and Barack Obama confirmed U.S. plans to carry out joint military exercises with South Korea later this week.
