Seoul Threatens “Enormous Retaliation” for North Korean Attack

  • First Posted: Nov 23 2010 15:55 PM

The South Korean president issued a warning hours after North Korean troops killed two people with a cross-border artillery barrage.

A statement on President Lee Myung-bak’s website said that North Korea would face “enormous retaliation” if it attacks South Korea again. This morning two people were killed and 16 more were injured in an attack that followed Seoul’s refusal to halt military drills in the area. The South Korean military returned fire and scrambled jets in response, and it is believed there may have been significant North Korean casualties. Leaders from around the world, including Stephen Harper, condemned North Korean aggression, and the UN Security Council could convene an emergency meeting in the next few days to deal with escalating tensions in the region. North Korea recently unveiled a new uranium-enrichment facility that will dramatically speed up its nuclear program.
