Hezbollah Behind Hariri Assassination, says CBC

  • First Posted: Nov 22 2010 08:04 AM

An investigation by the national broadcaster has found the Lebanese militant group was behind the Mideast’s most infamous assassination.

Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri was killed in a huge explosion in Beirut in 2005, and his unsolved killing has been likened to the Mideast’s version of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Many believed Syria was responsible for the murder because Hariri had been trying to reduce Damascus’s influence on his country, which has been politically dominated by Syria for decades. This perception led to the Cedar Revolution, an anti-Syrian uprising in Lebanon. The CBC is reporting today that its journalists have confirmed Hezbollah, the Syrian-backed Lebanese militant group, carried out the attack on Hariri. A UN commission has so far been inconclusive, but the CBC spoke to several UN investigators and claims there is conclusive evidence against Hezbollah.
