Edison Pena became famous for running underground during his 69-day ordeal.
Pena was invited to the race after word spread that while trapped underground with 32 other workers, he ran laps through the mine’s tunnels. At a press conference after yesterday’s race, which he finished in five hours and 40 minutes, he said that during his confinement he jogged everyday and told the mine “I’m gonna outrun you.” He also said participating in the marathon was his way of coping with the trauma he suffered while trapped in the copper mine. Pena is emerging as the most well known of Los 33. He recently appeared on David Letterman’s show and sang Elvis songs. Kenya’s Edna Kiplagat and Gebre Gebremarian of Ethiopia were the marathon’s female and male winners.
