Greece halts outgoing mail after rash of letter bombs

  • First Posted: Nov 03 2010 07:59 AM

More than ten explosive packages have been found addressed to foreign countries and embassies.

The Greek government has suspended all airmail leaving the country for 48 hours to allow them to check for more letter bombs. Several explosive packages have been sent to embassies in Athens, international organizations throughout Europe, and several foreign leaders including Germany’s Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. So far the small bombs have not injured anyone. Two packages were detonated in controlled explosions in the Athens airport’s cargo terminal, and two more exploded at the Russian and Swiss embassies. One package made it to Merkel’s office. The string of attacks is believed to be the work of an anarchist group called the Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire, which wants to start a revolution as Greece endures a period of severe austerity.
