The former child militant says he has found love and forgiveness.
In his first public statement since he was captured in Afghanistan at the age of 15, Omar Khadr told a courtroom at Guantanamo Bay that he has learned from reading Nelson Mandela that there is nothing to be gained from hate. He spoke for four minutes, telling the widow of Christopher Speer, the U.S. soldier he has confessed to killing, that he is sorry for the pain he's caused her. He also said he hopes to return to Canada and attend an Alberta university. Tabitha Speer rejected the apology, saying Khadr will always be a murderer in her eyes. Before Khadr’s statement Speer spoke for nearly an hour, describing in painful detail how her husband’s death has affected her and her family.
