N. Korea Fires Shots into S. Korea

Tensions are high after the two countries exchange shots across their heavily fortified border.

North Korean soldiers shot two rounds of ammunition in the direction of a South Korean border unit, and South Korean soldiers immediately returned fire. It’s still unclear whether the incident was an accident or deliberate, but no one appears to have been hurt. Relations between the two countries have deteriorated since a South Korean warship was torpedoed in March. Seoul blames North Korea for the attack, which killed 46 sailors, but Pyongyang denies responsibility. The border between the two Koreas is one of the world’s most-heavily fortified, with huge military build-ups on both sides. This is believed to be the first shooting incident across the border since 2006.
