The two disasters have killed 300 people since Monday.

Rescue workers are struggling to reach a string of remote Indonesian islands after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake triggered a tidal wave that flattened houses and swept villagers away on Monday. At least 272 people were killed by the three-metre wave and 400 remain missing. Bad weather is hampering aid efforts, but planes carrying relief supplies have reached some communities. In the east of the country, the Mt. Merapi volcano began erupting on Tuesday night, killing 28. Scientists warn that immense pressure is building beneath its lava dome and a powerful blast is imminent. The two disasters are separated by 1,300 km and are unrelated.
