Testifying at Omar Khadr’s sentencing hearing, a doctor said the likelihood of rehabilitating the confessed jihadi is poor.
In damning and sometimes bizarre testimony, the prosecution’s expert witness Dr. Michael Welner told the court that Khadr was unrepentant and his murder of a U.S. soldier had made him a celebrity among other prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. He also said that Khadr had made Cuba more famous than Fidel Castro. Welner made his assessment of the 24-year-old Canadian by viewing internet videos of the Khadr family, speaking to prison guards, and interviewing Khadr over two days. The trial’s jury is tasked with sentencing Khadr after he pleaded guilty to war crimes on Monday, but is unaware that its sentence will only be enforced if it is less than the eight-year sentence he’s already agreed to with prosecutors.
