Apple merges iPad, iPhone in new Macs

The company has combined features from its popular hand-held products in its latest operating system.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled new versions of the MacBook Air yesterday that borrow features from the iPad and iPhone, as well as a new lightweight operating system known as Lion. While the iPad and iPhone have a huge chunk of market share, Apple only makes about 4 per cent of computers sold worldwide. The company’s hoping to transfer some of the cachet of its handheld devices to its laptops, and the Lion operating system will feature a built-in app store similar to the iPhone’s. Lion’s interface will also mimic that of the iPhone. The new MacBook Air weighs 2.3 pounds and is .11 inches thick at its thinnest edge.
