The U.S. secretary of state is reportedly in discussions with Canada’s foreign minister to ensure Khadr is repatriated.

It was widely reported last week that Omar Khadr will plead guilty to war crimes and receive an eight year sentence, seven years of which will be served in Canada. According to a CNN report, high-level talks between Hilary Clinton and Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon were scheduled for Wednesday night, with Clinton seeking a guarantee that Khadr’s request to be transferred to a Canadian jail would not be rejected by Ottawa. A spokesperson for Cannon denied that such talks were taking place. Ottawa has repeatedly refused to intervene in the Khadr case, but it’s believed Barack Obama would like to avoid Khadr’s fate being decided by a controversial trial at Guantanamo Bay.
