A man who rescued an abandoned baby on Tuesday says he believes the child is his own.

The unidentified man was home on his lunch break when he heard cries coming from inside a dumpster outside his house. He jumped inside and found a newborn wrapped in a garbage bag, and he now says the child belongs to his girlfriend and that he is the father. The baby was taken to hospital in stable condition, and an hour later a woman who police say is the mother was also admitted. The man said that his girlfriend told him she was feeling sick on Tuesday morning but that neither of them knew she was pregnant. An examination of her mental condition has been ordered and she could face abandonment charges.
