Three people have been killed in an attack on a government building in Grozny.
One attacker blew himself up at the entrance of the building as lawmakers were entering for Tuesday’s parliamentary session, and two other militants barricaded themselves inside before detonating explosives which killed them and did heavy damage to the government building. Two police officers and one civilian were killed in the attack. Muslim rebels have been fighting for independence in the Chechnya region of Russia since the 1990s in a brutal war that has killed an estimated 100,000 people and displaced 500,000 more. Chechen rebels claimed responsibility for deadly Moscow subway attacks in March and held 700 people hostage in a Moscow theatre in 2002. Russian attempts to free the hostages resulted in 120 civilian deaths.
