The rest of the 33 rescued miners are expected to be discharged by Sunday.
Juan Illanes, Edison Pena, and Carlos Mamani were found healthy enough to be released from hospital on Thursday night, and went home to be with their families. Mamani, the only one of Los 33 for which the term “Chilean miner” is a misnomer, is headed home to Bolivia. All of the miners are in relatively good health, although two are suffering from silicosis, a lung disease common among miners that was only made worse by their 69-day underground ordeal. What comes next for the world’s most famous shovel-men is unclear, but they are in high demand around the globe. Pena, who jogged daily in the underground tunnels, has been asked to run in the New York Marathon.
