More than one seventh of the world’s population tuned in to watch the historic rescue.

The world watched with rapt attention yesterday as the last of the 33 men trapped in a Chilean mine for 70 days was pulled to the surface. It marked the end of a record-setting saga: the men had been living underground for longer than anyone else in history. Live video of the rescue also set a record, with a reported 1 billion people watching in real time on television and the internet. Video site Ustream said its audience of 5.4 million was its highest ever. The men are now resting in t, and while it’s unclear what their lives will now be like, analysts say they may have a difficult time coping with their new lives as international celebrities.
