The outcome of a court case has paved the way for New England Sports Ventures to buy England’s most successful soccer team.
George Gillett and Tom Hicks, the American owners of Liverpool F.C., had tried to stop the sale of the team to NESV but today a court ruled in favour of the Liverpool board and agreed that the sale could go ahead. Gillett and Hicks stand to lose £140 million in the sale. The team has been dogged by instability on and off the field recently, as executives struggled for control of the team and the once-great franchise plummeted in English Premier League standings. Liverpool’s fans are hoping NESV can revive the team’s fortunes, as the company did when it bought the Boston Red Sox in 2002. Two years later the team won its first World Series in 86 years.
