Gov. Mohammed Omar had survived several assassination attempts.
Fifteen people were killed today when a bomb exploded during Friday prayers at a mosque in Takhar province. Mohammed Omar, the governor of the neighbouring Kunduz province, was among the dead. He regularly attended prayers at the mosque and it’s believed he was the target of the attack. Omar had survived three previous attempts on his life and was slightly wounded by a roadside bomb in May 2009. Only last week he told an Afghan television network that security needed to be increased in Kunduz, a territory which local fighters and foreign militants have been using to stage attacks on other regions.
