Fuel trucks en route to Afghanistan remain vulnerable after Pakistan closed a key border crossing.
Attacks on NATO fuel convoys have become a daily occurrence since Pakistan closed the Torkham border crossing last week in protest over a U.S. helicopter strike that killed three Pakistani soldiers. Trucks headed for the Torkham crossing had to be diverted and some were left stranded. Today gunmen stormed two dozen trucks as they sat in a parking lot at a roadside hotel, and set them on fire. One driver was killed. It’s unclear who carried out the latest attack, but the Pakistani Taliban have claimed responsibility for earlier assaults. The string of attacks has futher strained relations between the U.S. and Pakistan, with the latter apparently doing little to stop insurgents who hit American targets within its borders.
