Commonwealth Games chief mistakes Camilla for Princess Di

Suresh Kalmadi thanked the late princess for attending the opening ceremonies in New Delhi.

The competition’s organizing committee has spent the past three weeks playing down potential embarrassments, including complaints about living conditions in the athletes village, major construction issues, and paltry ticket sales. Kalmadi didn’t help matters yesterday when, speaking to reporters, the head of the games’ organizing committee confused Prince Charles’s current wife Camilla with Princess Diana, who died 13 years ago. He quickly corrected himself, however. Charles and Camilla are on a five-day tour of India during the games. Some observers had predicted that major problems such as terrorist attacks would mar the competition, but those issues haven’t materialized. Instead, organizers are battling poor attendance, with only 600,000 of more than two million tickets sold. Apathy and poor organization are being blamed for the empty stadiums.
