The public safety minister says that Canadian Muslims need to point out extremists in their midst.
Earlier this year, three Manitoba youths disappeared somewhere in Pakistan, and friends of the young men afterward told security officials that the trio had left to fight a holy war. On Sunday, Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said that there is a real threat of Canadians receiving terrorist training abroad and returning to attack Canada, and that Canada’s Muslim communities need to be vigilant and point suspicious people out to authorities. The comments upset local Muslim groups, which say they already have good relations with law enforcement. Muslim leaders in Manitoba have met frequently with CSIS and the RCMP in recent months.
