Globe and Mail redux hits newsstands

The “most significant redesign in the Globe’s history” reflects the changing media climate.

It’s a brave new world at Canada’s paper of record this morning, as the Globe has unveiled new formats for both its online and print editions. While newspapers around the world have been hit hard by the internet, in a letter to readers this morning editor-in-chief John Stackhouse says a few years ago the Globe made the “profound decision” to continue printing the paper instead of moving to an exclusively online format. The new print edition is smaller and flashier and includes some pages printed on expensive glossy paper. Critics argue that in printing shorter stories and focusing on graphics, the paper’s sacrificed substance for style and the redesign won’t stop the inevitable demise of the print edition.
