The man who brought Canada its first World Series title will step down at the end of this season.
The Toronto Blue Jays have little to celebrate this year after missing the playoffs for the sixteenth straight season, but there will be raucous cheers when Gaston steps out of the Rogers Centre dugout for the last time tonight. Gaston won two back-to-back World Series championships in 1992 and 1993, becoming the first black manager in history to win the title and endearing himself to a city that’s become synonymous with losing sports teams in recent years. He was fired from the team in 1997 but re-hired in 2008. Sports writers describe him as a manager who always got the best out of even his most difficult and egotistical players, and the Baseball Hall of Fame is likely in his future.
