Officials are attempting to contain a major petroleum leak on the shores of Montreal East.
Shortly after 8:30 pm on Tuesday night firefighters were called to the east end of the city when residents reported a strong fuel-like smell. Officials now say that one of the reservoirs at the Alberta-based Suncor plant leaked and has sent a two-kilometer-long slick into the river. A spokesman for the fire department said that there is no danger to the public. The slick is currently being contained by floating fences and the initial leak has been stopped. Environment Canada is now assessing the damage of the spill, which is believed to be made up of mixture of petroleum products.
