The Conservatives are seeking to strip 400 prisoners of their old age pensions.
Clifford Olson was convicted of killing 11 children in B.C. in the early 1980s. He says he plans to take the government to court if it goes ahead with its plan to eliminate pension benefits for criminals in federal prisons. Last March news that Olson, now 70, was collecting his pension from prison sparked anger across the country. In response, Stephen Harper vowed to cut off his benefits. Olson then publically retaliated by donating his pension cheque to Harper earlier this month. About $2 million is spent on pensions for federal prisoners each year. The Conservatives have said the provinces should follow their lead and eliminate pensions for provincial prisoners. That move could save $8 million to $10 million annually.
