Colbert to appear before Congress

The TV funnyman will testify about immigrant workers.

On his show this week, Stephen Colbert worked on an upstate New York farm as part of the United Farm Workers’ “Take Our Jobs” campaign. The program offers legal U.S. residents a chance to do jobs usually performed by immigrant workers. Only seven people have enrolled, and the UFW says this proves immigrants aren’t stealing jobs from U.S. residents. This experience has apparently qualified Colbert to testify before a House subcommittee on immigrant labour. He’ll be called before the committee this morning, and has said he will appear in character as the blustery right-wing commentator he plays on TV. He won’t be the first entertainer to testify to Congress. Elmo promoted music education to a subcommittee in 2002.
